The leaves are beginning to change and pumpkin patches are popping up around the Lake Tahoe and Reno area. When locals begin to smell the piles of leaves burning, we know that Halloween is right around the corner. This year there are numerous costume parties, special events and ghost walks happening in the area for this spooky time of year. Here are five of the scariest:

Kingdom of Horrors at Roller Kingdom (Reno)

Reno’s Roller Kingdom, near downtown, is the site of the 4,000 square foot Kingdom of Horrors where the criminally insane hunter Mel terrorizes visitors with unspeakable, ghastly trophies and an endless vacation slideshow. Other frights include bone-chilling moans, frightening figures and the souls of the deranged. The event is open from October 6-31, Thursday-Saturday and costs $20 per person.

13th Annual Freakers Ball at Brüka Theatre (Reno)

Lucky number 13! On Saturday, October 30, the 13th Annual Freakers Ball will be held at the funky Brüka Theatre in downtown Reno. The door opens at 9 p.m. for this Benefit Ball and Costume Extravaganza. This year the Freakers Ball celebrates with dance, costumes, spontaneous eruptions of art, a fortune teller, a raffle, and a no host bar. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Reservations are available through the box office at (775) 323-3221. Advance reservations for this popular event are recommended. This event is for participants 21 and over.

The Black Catt Halloween Ball at Squaw Valley USA

On Saturday, October 30, the Olympic Village Lodge will be having a party from 7:30 p.m.-2 a.m. Get ready for a night of music, dancing and contests with SOL’ JIBE, DJ Silver Boombox Thief, Go Go Dancers and a raffle and costume contest. People in costume get one free drink. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

Truckee Historical Haunted Walking Tour

On Thursday and Friday, October 21 and 22 visitors to this railroad town will meet at Moody’s Bistro & Lounge for this walking tour of downtown Truckee’s historic and spooky places. The $25 tickets include a glass of wine and a raffle. The tour is a benefit for Trails & Vistas and the Truckee Donner Historical Society. This event is for adults only and tickets can be purchased from the website.

Virginia City Ghost Walking Tour

Follow in the footsteps of the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures. On Friday, October 28th, to Monday October 31st, Virginia City will be hosting a ghost walking tour through their haunted town. The tours will begin at 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m at the Silver Queen Hotel. The prices are $30 per person and they can be purchased in advance. There will also be a limited after-hours paranormal investigation. Only 10 tickets will be available at the cost of $70 per person. The investigation begins at 10:30 p.m. in front of the Silver Queen Hotel.
