Thursday, May 27, marked the opening weekend of Las Vegas’ annual World Series of Poker®. Buy-in for the first bracelet event on Friday, May 28, was $50,000.00–the largest ever. Play continues through July 17, and the big final event is held November 6-9. Poker fans can watch the games in progress at the Rio for free.
Texas Hold ‘Em may be the game most often associated with the tournament, but play this weekend will include other varieties of poker like Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better, Seven Card Razz, Seven Card Stud, Seven Card Stud Hi-Low Split-8 or Better, and Pot-Limit Omaha.
When the event was first held in 1970, it was a No-Limit ‘HoldEm at Binion’s Horseshoe in downtown Las Vegas. It was an invitation-only game for the best players, men like poker legends Johnny Moss, Doyle Brunson, and Amarillo Slim Preston. Today tens of thousands of players find a way to buy into the tournament, including celebrities. Last year, over $174,000,000.00 was awarded in prize money.
