Yes, you read it correctly; this is a golf tournament on snow that will be held in the très chic resort of Gstaad, Switzerland on Saturday, March 5, 2011. There is still time to register on the event’s website. Golfers will be arriving in Gstaad next week from all over Europe to participate in the second edition of the Boërl & Kroff Snow Golf Tournament and it’s been snowing in Switzerland so conditions should be optimal.
Legend has it that snow golfing is at least a 100 years old and that it was Jungle Book author, Rudyard Kipling who was one of the first players with partner Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes. They fabricated “holes” in the snow using jam jars during the freezing Vermont, USA winters and used red golf balls.
However, if you ask the Scots or the English, they will tell you the sport was created in the UK before Kipling was born.
In Switzerland, snow golf, also known as “Winter Golfing”, has existed since the late 1970s with the first Engadine Golf Tournaments played on snow at Silvaplana and St. Moritz. This event followed by many elegant social activities is usually held in January every year at St. Moritz.
Organizer of the Boërl & Kroff Snow Golf Tournament in Gstaad next week, Stéphane Sésé of Square Partners says that “Snow golfing is above all a matter of passion, meeting people and dreams coming true. It is also about the love of nature and travelling”.
There is now doubt that Gstaad can deliver on the best of nature, lots of sun, panoramic views and some of the most elegant facilities in the Alps.
The Boërl & Kroff Snow Golf Tournament participation includes a package for golfers and one for accompanying guests.
