Peru, Lima: To tip, or not to tip?

We all are used to tip people who performs any service or task for us. Tips vary from country to country, and odds arethat you, our dear English-speaking tourist, are likely to come from a country where tips are on percentage of the bill.

In Lima, Peru, things work in a little different way: it’s mostly on flat fees and also on your own criteria.

Let’s see some common situations.

Restaurants: Many fancy restaurants charge you for service, so actually there’s no need to tip waiters (or waitresses) unless you have received an extremely good service. Tips may vary, but locals usually tip something between one and five soles, depending on the quality of the service.

Taxis: No tips at all are required. But if you feel that the guy is really friendly and informative, you mayt tip him one sol.

Tour Guides: Use your own criteria: it really depends on the service. If your guide proves to be well informed, responsible and friendly, you can tip him/her. This may be an individual tip from you or a collection from all the group.

Enjoy your stay in Lima!
