Top 10 Things to Do in London

What's New — By Erin Gallagher Maury on March 22, 2010 at 10:16 pm

Here’s a “do not miss” list of sights and activities for any first time or repeat visitor to London:

1. Big Ben & Houses of Parliament – No need for an inside tour but viewing this iconic London building is a must see. Besides, no trip is complete without snapping several pictures of Big Ben.

2. Buckingham Palace and the Changing of the Guard - For that royal fix, check out the palace (only open to the public in summer months) and its stunning gates or if you must, stay for the guard ceremony. Can’t say it’s the most exciting event in town although seeing those stunning red coats are worth a few minutes of your time.

3. Kew Gardens - You haven’t seen gardens until you see this place. Sprawling across 300 acres, it’s absolutely breathtaking year round.

4. Harrods - Skip the clothing, just head straight for the impressive food halls.

5. Walk the South Bank – Follow the pedestrianized path from Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge along the river Thames. You’ll pass street performers, skate boarders, theaters, museums, ships, restaurants, markets plus have killer views of the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye and St. Paul’s Cathedral.

6. Westminster Abbey - Shrine to some serious historical figures, so inspirational.

7. British Museum - Crowded, crowded, crowded but it’s still worth it.  It’s free, so drop in even if time is short.

8. British LibraryActually, there is a museum inside the library and it’s not really on the tourist trail.  You’ll see more priceless documents, manuscripts and books than anywhere else in London.

9. Tower of LondonPossible the most famous prison in history and where the Queen’s bling is on display.

10. Hang out in a pub - Really this should be number 1! Socializing over a pint is what it’s all about here.
