The Fern Dell entrance to Griffith Park is a handy way to access this large and diverse park. Right on the edge of the park here is the Fern Dell trail itself (also called Ferndell, located at Black Oak Dr. and Fern Dell Dr. 90027). This short and picturesque stroll along a sunken man-made stream features a lot of shade and vegetation, including some impressive hanging ferns (pictures below and also on this laist.com post). Located near here is the Trails Cafe, where you can get baked goods, coffee and tea. If you are looking for a longer and slightly more intensive walk, then just past the top of the Fern Dell walk you can head uphill and to the right, following the trails leading up the dry canyon. A one mile hike will bring you the Griffith Observatory. This is a handy way to sidestep the parking crunch that can be involved with a visit to the observatory, although please note that there is no parking at Fern Dell after sunset.
