Best Cafes in Los Angeles

Food, Things to Do — By Sujata Day on December 18, 2011 at 2:55 am

In a town where no one seems to have a “real” job, cafes are filled to the brim at all hours of the day with striving actors, optimistic screenwriters and industry meetings. Grab an organic bite to eat, sip on your favorite caffeinated or herbal bevvie and pull up a seat at these daytime hotspots and if you look close, you might even spot a celeb or two.

Alcove Café & Bakery (1929 Hillhurst Ave.)

Swim through a sea of hipsters to sit outside on the brick terrace, and people watch to your heart’s content while sipping on a cup o’ joe and enjoying a scrumptious brunch. A local favorite, breakfast is served on weekdays until 2:30pm and weekends until 4pm for those suffering from hangover-itis. Stop by for some farm fresh eggs with a bellini or later in the day for wraps, burgers, or heartier fare like salmon or steak. An extensive wine, beer and sangria menu pleases those thirsting for something a little stronger than coffee.

Intelligentsia Coffee (Silverlake, Venice, Pasadena)

This hip but casual coffeebar stands out amongst the Coffee Bean & Tea Leafs and Starbucks peppered throughout the city. A known favorite of A and B-list celebs, you might find yourself parked next to bonafide star enjoying their morning pick me up. Intelligentsia strives to discover and deliver the best roast coffees in the world. If you’re more of a tea person like me, check out the dizzying selections of white, oolong, black, and green teas.

Urth Caffé (West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica)

Vinny and the gang from Entourage brunched here multiple times throughout its eight seasons on HBO. It’s no wonder this trendy café is hopping at all hours during the day, serving up organic whole bean coffees, hand selected fine teas, and healthy edible items. Devour the delicious Eggs Salmone in the morning and if you’re stopping in for lunch, order the hearty Urth Pot Roast Sandwich with mixed greens on the side.

Aroma Coffee & Tea (4360 Tujunga Ave.)

Partners with the Alcove Café & Bakery mentioned above, the owners of these joints clearly know the trick to running trendy, successful cafes. A hot spot for industry hob-nobbing, this Valley gem is always packed. If you don’t find an empty meter on Tujunga, check the side neighborhood streets for plenty of free 2 hour parking. Aroma has the best selection of white (try the Silver Needle!), oolong, and green teas, and you can never go wrong with the iced variety. Favorite dishes include the Grilled New York Steak Salad, Classic Aroma Burger, and the Turkey Hummus Melt.
