It Has Its Own Song

Like the Plaza de Cibeles, the Puerta de Alcala is one of Madrid’s most emblematic monuments. One of the epic stone doors to the city built in the 1700’s under King Carlos III, the Puerta de Alcala now commands a roundabout in front of the entrance to Retiro park and is the subject of postcards sold around the city.

You can appreciate the high regard for the monument (and the Movida) in Madrid’s popular imagination when I say that the 1986 song “La Puerta de Alcala” from Madrid-based band Suburbano hasn’t truly gone away yet.

Here it is on YouTube.
