Tips for (Legally) Running Amok in Madrid
Travel Tips — By Sarah E. Rogers on November 16, 2010 at 2:58 pmIf you want to cut loose and go wild on your next holiday in Madrid, that’s great, but let’s talk first, people. Why? Well, a Spanish jail is a marked improvement on, let’s say, a Thai jail, but it still probably didn’t make it on your must-see list.
If you’re considering…
…alcohol, you can have beer, red wine, vermouth, or even an absinthe cocktail if you feel like it! If you’re at least 18, that is.
…drinking outside, don’t do it unless you’re patronizing an established sidewalk bar or café. Drinking outside is illegal in Madrid.
…buying/using/possessing drugs, just say no until you reach Amsterdam.
…having sex, make sure the person you are with is at least 16 years old. Sleeping with someone younger than 18 is pervy, but it’s not actually illegal. The age of consent in Spain is a shockingly low 13 (the lowest age of consent in Europe!). However, if the person is under 16 there’s still the possibility of jail time if the parents think you used deceit to get the person younger than 16 to sleep with you. So don’t be a perv.
…getting back to your hotel after a night out, the Metro closes from 1:30 am to 6:00 am. During that time you can catch a night bus or take a taxi.
Any questions?
