A Virtual Visit to Madrid’s Top Art Museums
Travel Tips — By Sarah E. Rogers on March 15, 2011 at 4:40 pmArmchair travel is getting easier every day. Thanks to Google’s recently launched Art Project, you can now “virtually visit” two of Madrid’s top art museums, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía from the comfort of your own home.
Together with the Prado Museum, these two collections form the Golden Triangle of Art: the Spanish capital’s most renowned and highly-rated art museums. Located in Villahermosa Palace, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum houses European paintings dating from the 13th to 20th centuries while the Reina Sofía Museum is located mainly in an 18th-century hospital and contains 19th- and 20th-century paintings and sculptures, including important works by Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí.
Google’s Art Project is an excellent tool for giving you a preview of forthcoming exhibitions, reminding you of a couple of Madrid’s highlights, or simply allowing you to enjoy a little high-tech armchair travel. But of course there’s nothing like being able to admire and examine every detail of the paintings in person. See you there!
