Best Ways to Spend a Sunday in Madrid
Travel Tips — By Sarah E. Rogers on March 30, 2011 at 9:13 amMost shops in Madrid are closed on Sundays, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing fun to do in the Spanish capital. In fact, Madrileños usually dedicate Sundays to relaxation and fun.
Here are some of the best and most popular ways to spend a Sunday in Madrid, from a walk in the park to dinner and drinks.
Tapas and Vermouth
The La Latina neighborhood (surrounding Plaza de la Cebada) is full of tapas bars and cafes, which on Sundays are popular places to go with friends to enjoy some tasty Spanish tapas with a glass of beer or vermouth. There you can soak up some authentic Spanish joie de vivre.
Rastro Market
The Rastro is Madrid’s famed Sunday morning flea market. If you ever wanted an antique divan, vintage Spanish toys, new silver jewelry, or a printed band tee, you’ll undoubtedly find one here. The Rastro has any number of new, antique, fun, and unusual items.
Retiro Park
All year round Madrileños go to beautiful Retiro Park to stroll, relax, and simply enjoy life on a Sunday. You can also go for a row on the lake, wander the gardens, feed the swans, and if you’re lucky, listen to the refrains of a Spanish guitarist.
