A Day at the Races

Things to Do — By Sarah E. Rogers on May 23, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Just outside the city you can find Madrid’s historic racetrack, Hipódromo Zarzuela, first opened in 1941. The Spring-Summer 2011 season is currently in full swing, so if you wish to have a day at the races, sip a cool drink, and rub elbows with some of Madrid’s posh crowd, you can have your pick: there are races every Sunday morning until June 26 and every Friday evening from June 2 to July 21. And if you’re feeling lucky, you can bet on the races, too.

If you don’t want to drive, it’s not a problem, as on race days there are free shuttles to the racetrack. They leave one hour before the start of the races from Paseo Moret, right next to the Intercambiador de Moncloa.
