Look To The Sky: Maui Stargazing Cruise
Things to Do — By keithdevey on June 28, 2010 at 12:10 amMost tourists vacationing on Maui are very familiar with the daytime pleasures of sandy beaches, warm water, and a tropical climate. Once night falls however, it’s off to a recommended restaurant and then the head hits the pillow. Well I am here to tell you that the Pacific Whale Foundation’s Stargazing Cruise is an evening escape you will be planning your whole day around.
The night sky over the Hawaiian Islands is so beautiful it looks as if handfuls of gold glitter were thrown on a black canvas. Because the islands are so remote and pollution levels are low, the stars appear brighter and clearer than anywhere I have traveled. Don’t believe me? After all, its was these same stars that the ancient Polynesians used centuries ago as a map to discover the remote islands in the middle of the Pacific.
While on this two-hour cruise that departs the Lahaina harbor at 8 pm(a 10 minute drive from the resorts in Ka’anapali), look to the sky as an award-winning astronomer guides you on a celestial journey. Learn about all the famous constellations and Hawaiian mythology, as you sail in complete darkness. Don’t forget to look back to the coastline occasionally to see the glitters of light emitted from houses and stores along Front Street. You’ll get a good idea of how under populated and peaceful Maui really is.
Be sure to check the Pacific Whale Foundation’s calendar, because the cruise is only offered on select dates, and tends to sell out. In the upcoming months, it looks like stargazing cruises are scheduled for 7/1, 7/4, 7/10, 8/4, 8/11. The 2-hour cruise costs around $45, which is an amazing bargain considering it includes a traditional Hawaiian meal, local cocktails, sailing, and professional narration. Bring a sweater or blanket because in can get a bit chilly out on the water.
