Blues, Brews, and Bar-B-Q Every Wednesday Night in Ma’alaea

What could be better than drinking a cold beer, eating barbecued ribs smothered in sauce, and listening to live music, all while watching a Maui sunset?  Nothing!  Every Wednesday evening, Beach Bums Bar & Grill in the Ma’alaea Harbor hosts Blues, Brews, and Bar-B-Q.

The location of this bar and grill is fitting to it’s name and theme seen throughout.  Overlooking the Ma’alaea Harbor, many tourists tend to stop for a drink or sit down for a tasty meal once their snorkel cruise to Molokini or whale watching voyage has returned to the harbor.

Having just opened in 2008, Beach Bums has already made a name for itself on Maui for having some of the best barbecue dishes.  Housing the largest wood smoker in the Hawaiian Islands (it was custom made in Mesquite, TX), you can guarantee that your red meat will be cooked to perfection.  The owners add a Hawaiian twist to the menu by using Kiawe wood (local tree) and mango wood to fuel some of the barbecuing, adding a distinct local taste to each cut of meet.

A couple months ago I attended a Blues, Brews, and Bar-B-Q night and ordered the full rack of ribs, which came with two sides and corn bread (costs about $15).  Be sure to ask for patio seating, as the band usually sets up outside, and you will get a good views out over Ma’alaea.  It is also fun to people-watch as tourists return from their day out on the water.

Before heading to Beach Bums Bar and Grill for dinner, you may want to window shop at the stores in the Ma’alaea shopping village or check out Maui’s number one attraction, the Maui Ocean Center (aquarium).
