Certain things in life complement each other perfectly.  A Corona and a lime, graham crackers with chocolate and roasted marshmallows, and of course shave ice and Hawaii.  While there are plenty of options for a cold ice cone found across the island, the smart pick has to be the small stand alone shack that goes by the name of Ululani’s.

Now you mainlanders are probably thinking, “a shave ice is a shave ice, what’s the difference?” I am here to tell you that the difference is night and day.  Ululani’s ice is shaved so thin that it literally dissolves in your mouth like cotton candy.  Top that off with your choice of 41 gourmet  syrups and toppings such as shredded coconut, haupia sauce, azuki beans, and tapioca pearls, and you can now start to understand what separates Ululani’s from the pack.

Just take a look at some of these unusual syrup flavors to pick from:

  • Chocolate
  • Hoku (starfruit and pineapple)
  • Pickled Mango
  • Tamarind
  • Tiger’s Blood
  • Wedding Cake

Ululani’s is named after the founder and owner, who grew up on Oahu with a dream to eventually open up her own shave ice stand.  In 2008 that dream became a reality, and now Ululani’s has a shop in both Lahaina and Kahului.

Be sure to check out Ululani’s and try some of the unusual toppings and flavors.  As always, I recommend Li Hing Mui.
