Bike-Operated Smoothie Stand on Maui

Who needs a Jamba Juice when you could have an organic Maui smoothie made at a roadside stand that I don’t think a GPS gadget could locate?  Oh ya, and you have to pedal a bicycle to power the blender.

The road to Hana can be a grueling trek for the driver, but a real treat for the rest of the passengers in the car.  With attractions like the seven pools, Wai’anapanapa State Park, the Hana Lava Tube, and waterfalls around every turn, it’s hard to see all Hana has to offer in just one day. As you drive the winding two-lane road past the seven pools, keep your eyes peeled for a smoothie shack on the right hand side of the road.

A family-owned organic farm by the name of Laulima Farms operates this fun hole-in-the-wall smoothie shack that many tourists drive by without batting an eye.  Heck, I only discovered it a couple months ago and have lived on Maui more than a decade. Inside the shack you will find a bicycle rigged up to a blender.  Once a few local bananas, mangos, coconuts, papayas, and ice are loaded into the blender, it’s time to earn your tasty treat.  As you pedal frantically (and your family and friends take embarrassing photos of you), the blades in the blender start to spin and mix your island smoothie.

The combination of taste, ambiance, and middle-of-nowhere location make this smoothie stand a must-visit.  I have also heard they make amazing salads, in case you are looking for a lunch stop.
