The Four Seasons in Wailea houses two lovable parrots named Ricky and Lucy (and yes, one has red feathers). The Westin in Ka’anapali features colorful pink flamingos and black swans in a tranquil lagoon. But it is the Hyatt Regency Maui that takes the top aviary award for calling a family of African Black-Footed penguins their permanent guests.
You don’t need to be a guest at the hotel to see these black and white flightless stars. If you walk through the Hyatt Regency open-air lobby, past other tropical birds and macaws, you will stumble across an enclosed pond with plastic igloo-shaped houses. There are a couple placards that talk about the breed of penguin and how they are able to survive in Hawaii’s tropical climate.
Who knew you could see penguins on Maui, right? Now is also a great time to see humpback whales on the island (just fyi). Here is a video I found online of the penguins. Enjoy!
