Fresh New Design Abounds in Miami

The influx of young and edgy designers in the Sunshine state is in no small part thanks to the massive and unstoppable growth of what is now the largest Contemporary Art Fair in the World. Art Basel is just one of the many reasons why Miami has seen such an influx in world-class design. The fact that Miami also boast some of the wealthiest homes and homeowners in the country is also a fair excuse for fine design as well.

From jewelry to furniture and fashion, Miami has built an identity for itself all its own. The ever-growing Miami Design District, just north of downtown, is host to an impressive collection of boutiques and galleries showcasing the many designers that call Miami their home, as well as a rather eclectic crowd of other Latino and International Designers.

For the trendiest thing to hit this side of South Beach, why not check out the hot design collective “Friends with You”. This pair of Miami natives has built a mini-empire of happiness, if colors and smiley faces are any indication. Their slogan, “ Magic, Luck, and Friendship” is something between a care bears episode and a saccharine utopia. Fortunately, the vibrancy of their toys, clothing and trinkets fit right in with the tropical paradise that is South Florida.

Also located just off of North Miami Ave. in the Design District, is a rarity in the United States on the whole. Finnish design at its finest is what best describes the renowned designer Marimekko. Bright patterns that are reminiscent of 60’s minimalist hippie prints are what mostly characterize the tapestries and clothing items that define this small collection of rarities. Leave it to Miami to come up with oddities and surprises at every turn.

The progressive entourage of art aficionados that swarm South Florida in early December has provided a basis for the thriving art and design scene that is defining the city today. From the fresh and avant-garde sights to the staple pastels and classic Art Deco design work that initially gave Miami its name, you’ll find a healthy spectrum of aesthetic treats throughout the city. Though the Miami Design District is the hub of the action, be sure to explore Coral Gables and the rest of Miami Beach to get a comprehensive view of what the Magic City has to offer.
