First of all, many tourists just ask locals for “the Augustiner.” The Augustiner could refer to dozens of restaurants around town. This is a major problem because the food quality and atmosphere vary considerably as the only feature that is the same is the brand of beer (not the owner, nothing but the beer brand).
The Augustiner Keller has one of the largest and busiest beer gardens in the world, but also has room for over 700 people inside the restaurant. The place can be VERY busy especially on weekends, so reservations in the winter may be a good thing.
It’s located just a 5 minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof (the main train station), on Arnulf strasse, which is the street on the north side of the station.
The Food: Traditional Bavarian food.
The Beer: Augustiner beer is considered the local’s favorite as they sell more beer in Munich than any other brewery.
The Price: The Augustiner Keller is about a Euro more than similar restaurants downtown for most meals, but is worth the cost.
The Atmosphere: noisy and crowded, the way a beer hall should be.
