The Spatenhaus is the flagship beer hall of the Spaten brewery.  Unlike the other breweries in town,   Spaten only do one type of beer, the Helles.  Helles is the best selling type of beer in Munich as well as being primarily what tourists drink while they are here.  Helles means bright, as in color, and is a lager beer which is less bitter and less hop flavored than a Pilsner, for example.

The Spatenhaus is located at Max Joseph platz, directly across from the royal palace and the national opera house.  In warm weather there is outdoor seating, but the inside is very inviting in the winter as it feels like a cozy and slightly upper class Bavarian restaurant.  The only downside to this is that the Spaten Haus food prices are a bit higher than its competitors.

The Food:  Traditional Bavarian Food

The Price:  The food is higher than average, maybe 12-25 Euros for a meal, plus drinks.  Beer prices keep even with average prices in Munich.

The Beer:  Although this is the flagship beer hall of Spaten, since Spaten only makes one type of beer, other beers are available in the form of Franziskaner wheat beer and Löwenbräu dark beer.

The Atmosphere:  A classy beer hall, people heading to or from the opera (across the street) will feel comfortable here.  At the same time, it is a beer hall, so casual dress is certainly acceptable as well and you shouldn’t feel shy about stopping in for a quick beer on a tour of the city.
