Augustiner Großgaststätten

Food — By Mike Richardson on February 24, 2011 at 5:04 pm

The Augustiner Großgaststätten is probably the easiest to find major beer hall in the city.  It’s located right on the main pedestrian shopping street between the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) and Marienplatz (the central square).  This former location of the actual Augustiner brewery is one of the most authentic beer halls in town.

As I have mentioned before when highlighting the Augustiner Keller and the Augustiner am Platzl, Augustiner is simply a brand of beer, the part that is important if you are in town and asking for directions is the second part of the name.  This one is usually referred to in English as simply “The Augustiner Restaurant.”

For example:   “Augustiner _____”.  The blank space is the important bit.  In this case, if you really can’t figure out how to pronounce Großgaststätten, ask for the Augustiner on Neuhauser Strasse.

This is Augustiner’s most central and flagship beer hall.  Although I have a much stronger personal affinity for the Augustiner Keller (Augustiner’s main beer garden, especially wonderful in the summer), this one should still be on your list of beer halls to visit.

The Food:  Traditional Bavarian Food

The Price:  This is actually one of the cheapest Beer halls as you should be able to get a good meal for around 10-12 Euros

The Beer:  Augustiner is by far the best selling beer in the beer capital of the world, just think about it.

The Atmosphere:  Loud and busy, like a beer hall should be.  However, there are different sections to this large beer hall and so you should do a lap inside before choosing where you want to sit.  Also, during the summer they open the inner courtyard which can be very appealing.
