This year the Women’s World Cup Soccer tournament will be held in Germany! There are nine venues all around Germany with the closest to Munich being in the near by city of Augsburg.
Augsburg is a beautiful city only a 45 minute train ride from Munich. As Augsburg was one of the wealthiest cities in all of Europe during the Renaissance, it is certainly on my list of top day trips from Munich even without the world cup going on. It also happens to be Germany’s second oldest city.
Augsburg has a brand new soccer stadium with a capacity of around 30,000 and will host 4 matches in the tournament. Here’s a list of the matches:
- June 29th - Norway vs. Equatorial Guinea
- July 2nd - North Korea vs. Sweden
- July 5th – England vs. Japan
- July 10th – Quarter Finals – Winner of group C vs. Runner up of group D
For most readers of Nileguide, I believe the two matches on July 5th and July 10th would be of the most interest. Team USA could be in the July 10th match if they win their group.
