Best views in Munich

Things to Do — By Mike Richardson on October 17, 2011 at 2:32 pm

While seeing the sights of any city one of the things I find most important is to know where to go for the best views in town.  Here are my top 3 choices:

  1. In Munich’s case, the number one best view in town is also the oldest building in town:   Saint Peter’s church usually referred to as “Alter Peter” (old Peter).  It is nearly in the center of Munich, just across Marienplatz from the New Town Hall which is the most photographed building in town.  St. Peter’s church also offers a great view of nearly the entire old town including the Cathedral (Frauenkirche), the church of the Holy Ghost, the Viktualien market, and the Isartor (city gate facing the Isar River).  You can even see what’s happening at the Oktoberfest grounds from St. Peter’s!  The only problem is that there is no elevator and it is a few hundred stairs to climb.  If arriving by public transportation, take any S-bahn to Marienplatz.
  2. The tower of the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) offers views of St. Peter’s church, the Cathedral, and most of the downtown area just like St. Peter’s itself, but is much easier to get to as you can take an elevator rather than a few hundred stairs.  As it’s directly across from St. Peter’s church its view is very similar and you will probably want to choose one or the other.  The reason this is slightly worse than St. Peter’s is that it is a shorter tower, a more obstructed view, and of course it’s pretty hard to take a picture of the new town hall from the old town hall!  This is also located right smack in the middle of the city at Marienplatz. If arriving by public transportation, take any S-bahn to Marienplatz.
  3. The Olympic Tower, located in the far North of the city, offers great views of the Olympic park and on clear days you can see nice views of the Alps.  What you cannot see from the Olympic Tower is the old town of Munich.  There is also a restaurant near the top of the tower so you can enjoy the view while eating in style.  Reservations required at the restaurant, but not the observation deck.  If arriving by public transportation take the U3 to Olympia zentrum.

During the Oktoberfest and the Frühlingsfest (spring festival) I would also recommend going up the statue of The Bavaria located just off of the Theresienwiese (Oktoberfest grounds) for awesome views of the festivities.  However, if you’re claustrophobic, you might want to skip the Bavaria as there isn’t much room at the top.
