Sieze the day and visit the hip new wine bar Carpe Diem that just opened this month in downtown Napa. It’s the brainchild of three young wine-lovers, sommelier Steve Distler who’s a New York transplant, and local kids Scott and Stephanie Kendall.
The three met working at Del Dotto Winery in St. Helena and talked for years about opening their own place, then finally marshalled help from their families to realize their dream. The idea? A friendly, relaxed wine bar that’s fun, not intimidating, and pairs fresh local food with wine in a fresh, creative way.
The space, formerly the Gondola Restaurant on Second Street, is lively and informal, with plenty of outdoor seating. Most dishes are in the $10-15 range, making this a relaxed, affordable way to celebrate local food and wine, and enjoy downtown Napa’s newfound liveliness. With uber-hip Morimoto restaurant now open in the nearby Riverfront development, once-overlooked Napa now has plenty to keep visitors at the south end of the valley.
