The Word on Orlando’s Local Media
Travel Tips — By Kristen Manieri on March 22, 2010 at 7:53 pmWhen visiting Orlando, a few local publications can definitely guide you in your on-site planning and give you access to events, attractions, and hotspots usually only locals know about. Here’s a quick overview:
If you want to blend into Orlando like you’ve lived here all your life, you definitely have to get your hands on a copy of Orlando Weekly. This weekly, newspaper-type publication is free and can usually be found at more than 1300 distribution points around and beyond downtown Orlando. Check out coffee shops, cafes, and book stores. They also have a fabulous online calendar that can be viewed at www.orlandoweekly.com/calendar. A new issue of Orlando Weekly is available every Thursday and you’ll find it packed with event listings, restaurants reviews and listings, coupons for attractions and restaurants, and edgy editorial.
Orlando’s main newspaper is the Orlando Sentinel. This is where you’ll find local and national news stories, weather, a small amount of local goings on, and some good restaurant reviews by Heather McPherson. The Sentinel will likely be available in your hotel lobby and any nearby convenience store or Starbucks.
Orlando also has two great city magazines: Orlando Home and Leisure and Orlando – The City Magazine. Both are definitely aimed at Orlando residents but they also feature local restaurant reviews and listings, upcoming events, and spotlights on current exhibits and gallery showings. These magazines can be purchased at bookstores like Borders and Barnes and Nobles.
Lastly, if you’re staying in tourist areas like I-Drive or Disney, you’ll likely come upon Orlando Attractions Magazine, which gives a good overview of theme parks and etcetera and a mighty fine selection of money saving coupons.
