Clown Around at Orlando Circus School

Kid Friendly, Things to Do, What's New — By Sarah Sekula on May 29, 2011 at 9:35 pm

By the time I was 8, the trampoline had become my world. I’d race home after school, just to spend a few hours flipping around. Front flips, backflips, handsprings. You name it, I was all about that giant, bouncing contraption. With that said, it’s easy to see why my eyes lit up as I walked into the Orlando Circus School. To my right, a unicycle sat propped against a bright green wall. To my left, kids were doing somersaults on the padded floor. All around: palpable energy. And straight ahead: the trampoline. This was a dream come true, I thought.

I trotted happily over to the trampoline where three women in their 20s and 30s were tucked into cubbyhole “window” cutouts. One girl, with unusually toned arms, popped out of a window and started bouncing up and down on the trampoline. “Jumping just makes me happy,” she said. “Next,” said Victor, the instructor, in his thick Russian accent. As soon as I took my turn I saw exactly what she meant. It’s been years since I’ve had the chance to flip around on a trampoline. Victor asked me to do a back flip first. No problem. Then a front flip. Then a combination of both. My childhood was rushing back.

By the end of the class I was ready to attempt the double back tuck. To be honest, I had no idea how to accomplish this. Just couldn’t wrap my brain around getting that second flip in there. So, yes, I was a little nervous. Victor said, nonchalantly, just tuck into a ball and then your brain will figure out when to untuck. So I figured I’d trust him and the old noggin and give it a go. Jump once. Twice. Three times. And double. Back. Tuck. Ta-da.

Well, okay it really took me three tries to land it. And, yes, it was disorienting. But let’s just say, my cranium didn’t let me down. This is definitely an experience to write home about. I mean, as an adult, how often do you get to do this? And for kids, wow, they can certainly let loose here. From obstacle courses to juggling to wire-walking, they will be perfectly content. Granted, it’s not for everyone. But for those who do love gutsy circus-act type stuff, this place will definitely knock your coolness factor up a notch. Likewise, it takes you back to your childhood days, and what could be better than that?
