Walk on the Tame Side in Montmartre

Made famous by the Moulin Rouge and its hedonistic revellers, Montmartre is well worth a wander during the day. As you alight the Metro stop Abbesses, check out the Paris cityscape mural, and its unusual green wrought-iron arches and amber lights, which are one of the few original Art Nouveau stations in Paris.

After savouring the seediness of Montmartre’s adult outlets, browse the electic range of shops while heading up to the heavens of Basilique du Sacre Coeur either by the steps or the funicular. The Sacre Coeur is made of white stone that cleans itself whenever it rains, ensuring its etheral quality remains everlasting. The cathedral deserves exploration or simply enjoy the wonderful views of Paris, relax in the park just below or ride the carousel.

The nearby Place du Tertre is touristy Paris at its best, but nonetheless the square is lined with lively restaurants and teeming with umbrellas and canopies. Have a caricature done by one of the street artists or if you take your art a little more seriously, become absorbed in Dali’s dramatic world at Espace Dali Montmartre (12 Rue Cortot).  Visit the Musee de Montmartre (11 Rue Poulbot) which recounts its history from its bohemian past to the present.

Or  simply languish in a pavement cafe and do what’s done best in the French capital – just be!
