Top radio stations for your Perth trip

Listening to a local radio station while you’re visiting Perth can definitely help enhance your trip – you’ll learn what the locals like to talk about and listen to, and you  might even get some useful sightseeing and other travel tips. To help you figure out where you should tune your radio too (a better system than trial and error, I think) I’m going to let you know the five most popular radio stations in Perth, as per the most recent ratings survey:

  1. Mix94.5 – 16.0 (down 1.0)
  2. ABC720 – 11.8 (up 0.8)
  3. 92.9 – 11.6 (up 0.2)
  4. 96FM – 9.9 (down 0.8)
  5. NOVA93.7 – 9.7 (up 0.1)

Mix94.5, 92.9, 96FM and Nova are all somewhat similar in that they’re commercial radio stations playing pop music from the last few decades as well as today’s hits, and the biggest differences between them come from the style of their morning and afternoon disk jockeys. In contrast, ABC720 is a government-sponsored station largely made up of talkback radio which is often fascinating.

Although it came in only at number 7 on the list, my favourite station deserves a special (biased) mention. Triple J (in Perth, 99.3FM) is the government youth radio, but you don’t have to be young to enjoy the lack of advertising and the innovative, refreshing discussions by interesting DJs.
