Geek Revolution: Phoenix Comicon Invades Downtown

The promoters of Phoenix Comicon 2011 describe the four-day event–which draws comic books artists, film and TV stars, and hordes of loyal fans dressed up in elaborate, latex-based costumes–as “the signature pop-culture event of the Southwest.” And who’s to argue with them? Last year, the event drew nearly 14,000 attendees, and event organizers are expecting to break the 20,000 mark this year.

Famous faces attending this year’s Phoenix Comicon include Marvel Comics superstar Stan Lee, Star Trek alumni Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, and Will Wheaton, “Mistress of the Dark” Elvira, Kristin Bauer of “True Blood,” and several top industry artists and writers.

Meet the "Queen of Halloween" at Phoenix Comicon 2011, held Memorial Day weekend at the downtown civic center.

There will also be plenty of after-hours social programming to interact with your fellow geeks, including the popular Geek Prom, performances from L.A.-based Hammer Improv, a film festival, and even a Zombie Beauty Pageant.

Check out the entire event schedule on the official Phoenix Comicon website.
