After the club, after the show, after the movie . . . Where can you go for a good meal in Phoenix after midnight? Granted, Phoenix is home to a thriving population of street vendors, most selling hot, greasy, and delicious Mexican food, and dishing out the taquitos and burros well into the wee hours of the morning. A simple late-night drive down Van Buren, McDowell, or other major East-West arteries, is a smoky spectacle of curbside grilling and lunch trucks serving up late-night plates to families gathered around picnic tables, festively lit with strings of light and television sets propped up on make-shift counters.
But let’s assume you’re looking for a more traditional sit-down meal, maybe even with some swanky ambience. Here are a few places in the Phoenix Metro area to enjoy a meal after midnight.
Delux. This Biltmore-area upscale burger joint, open until 2 a.m. nightly, features gourmet hot dogs, salads, sandwiches, and of course, some of the tastiest burgers in the Valley. All burgers feature Niman Ranch beef served on a brioche bun. Try the yummy sweet potato fries, which come served in tiny shopping carts. Delux is located at 3146 E. Camelback Road in Phoenix. Four Peaks Brewery. This favorite Tempe (with a second location now in Scottsdale) watering hole and lunch spot is also a great place for a late-night beer or sandwich. Four Peaks is famous for its boutique beer, which is made at their own Tempe facility. The eclectic pub menu is quite good, too, with lighter fare like spanakopita and chicken chile rolls perfect for those in need of a pick-me-up. Hungry carnivores may be drawn to one of the larger plates, such as the filet mignon medallions cooked in beer-steeped demi-glace. Four Peaks is open until 2 a.m. nightly. Two locations. Visit fourpeaks.com for more information.
Citizen Public House. This popular Old Town Scottsdale destination is a modern, upscale take on the traditional pub. Swanky leather booths and sleek, stainless steel-topped bars set the scene for a long night of drinking and noshing. Who says that late night eats have to be greasy and fast? Menu items here, including the irresistible Gorgonzolaa-Emmental mac-n-cheese and famous house chopped salad, should please even the most finicky late-night gourmand. The kitchen is open until 1:30 a.m Thursdays through Saturdays. Citizen Public House is located at 7111 E. Fifth Ave. in Scottsdale. (480) 398-4208
