With golden sand beaches, quaint cobblestone streets and stunning Pacific sunsets, there’s no doubt that Puerto Vallarta is a place for romance. And what could be more romantic than dining by candlelight high above the twinkling lights of the city?
Barcelona Tapas is my top pick for romantic dining in Puerto Vallarta due to the fantastic view and intimate setting of small plates. You and your sweetie can pick from a menu laden with delicious dishes, from the succulent boneless beef short ribs to the vegetarian Stacked Roasted Beets served with goat cheese and pecans. There’s plenty on the menu for seafood lovers too, including the award-winning Paella. The only thing to note here is that the restaurant is up several flights of stairs, so it’s not a good choice for those with mobility limitations. But for everyone else, trust me, the climb is worth it!
A more accessible option for romantic dining is the exquisite Cafe des Artistes, also located in El Centro. Located in a lovely old home, the restaurant has an intimate and upscale atmosphere. The patio is the most romantic, with soft lighting and beautiful landscaping creating a tropical backdrop to the incredible service and food. The menu is fluid and you can be sure the specials are fantastic. They also have a superb wine list. Cafe des Artistes is a little more formal than Barcelona Tapas, so feel free to dress up in your finery.
For another fabulous view of the city and bay, climb high up on the hills overlooking the Romantic Zone to the Vista Grill. Here you will find some truly breathtaking views of the city and surrounding areas; it almost seems a shame to dine there at night. Be sure to catch the sunset here if you can.
The Vista Grill specializes in International cuisine and offers a romantic setting with candlelight and soft music. You can choose from the well-appointed interior dining room or enjoy the fresh air on the multi-level terrace. Entrees include items like the walnut-crusted rack of lamb with chipotle glaze and seared tuna with eggplant cake.
Lastly, what could be more romantic than soft, live jazz and delicious French food while dining along the Rio Cuale? At Le Bistro Jazz Cafe, you’ll feel like you walked into a Humphrey Bogart movie. Le Bistro is a slightly more casual than Cafe des Artistes or Vista Grill, and they serve both lunch and dinner. Live piano music accompanies your meal. You will find some international dishes like Duck Magret with Blackberry Sauce as well as French favorites, like the Squash Blossom crepes. You’ll even find some Mexican favorite too, like the crab enchiladas. Finish up your meal with a flaming Spanish coffee.
