Sure, you can get a good vegetarian meal in Reno (try the Dandelion Deli on Wells), but in this land of cattle ranching and gambling…we eat meat. So if you are a vegetarian or vegan, run away now, because this is a selection of the best slabs of carnivore cuisine in the Reno/Sparks area.
The Awful Awful Burger at the Little Nugget in downtown Reno and at the Wolf Den near the University have made Reno famous. This half pound of griddle meat is like no other burger you’ve had before. If that’s not enough, its served with a pound of fries that will give you a mild heart attack.
This scrumptious bit of dead flesh is marinated in a three peppercorn cognac sauce and it’s served with roasted garlic mashed potatoes, fresh sauteed carrots, green beans and shallots. Whoa partner! This dish is very easy to inhale, so slow down and savor.
This is the place to go if you want to dress up a bit. Nearly all the dishes at the Steakhouse are great, but the Filet Mignon with the béarnaise sauce tops the list as one of the best meat dishes in town.
If you are lucky enough to get to Louis’ on the night they are serving oxtails, go out and hit the slots after dinner. The Basque people in the Reno area do oxtails right. The meat falls off the bones and they are served family style with beans, soup, salad, heart and other side dishes.
There might be a reason why the king of carnivores, Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, came to the Gold-N-Silver Inn in downtown Reno. He loved the Lemonade Pork Chops at this greasy spoon, but I fall every time for the Chicken Fried Steak. It’s a classic dish swimming in gravy and pepper with mashed potatoes on the side.
