Copacabana beach will be the place to be during the World Cup

With just days to go until the start of the FIFA World Cup, the streets of Rio are already a sea of green and yellow as the locals prepare to cheer on Brazil to what everyone hopes will be the country’s sixth World Cup victory.

The patriotic locals take their football (or soccer, to our North American readers) extremely seriously, and visitors lucky enough to be in Rio for the World Cup will find the games screened everywhere from packed out sports bars to street corners.

For the ultimate World Cup experience, however, Copacabana is the place to be. Brazil’s matches will be shown on big screens right on the beach, so sunseekers won’t even have to change out of their swimwear in order to catch the games.
Better still, the best moments (including, hopefully, some scorching Brazilian goals) will be coming right at you in 3D thanks to special Sony screens erected as part of a month long celebration of all things futebol.

Rio is one of 10 cities worldwide taking part in the FIFA International Fan Fest, and treats laid on for footie fans will include not just a giant LED screen, but also a stage featuring live music, bars, and restaurants. Inspired by the world’s great football stadiums, the pavilion will feature an astroturf seating/standing/dancing area, and fans can chjeer on their team from specially erected bleachers as well as from strategic points along the 4.5 kilometer beach.

The event kicks off on June 11th, and runs right through until the close of the tournament on July 11th. Watch this space for details of a big-name performance to take place on the penultimate night.
