If you’re hoping to spend your break in Rio relaxing in the lap of luxury, Sofitel Rio could well be the place to do it. Models, film stars and footballers are among those who come here to appreciate the plush rooms, excellent facilities and extremely courteous service – even Brazilian president Lula is a regular here.
The location of the hotel couldn’t be better either – situated right in front of the beach at the corner where Copacabana meets Ipanema.
And it’s not just the A-listers who receive top-notch treatment here. The concierge service is renowned across the city, and head concierge Silvio Mauricio Gomes is always on hand to help guests out with any questions and concerns.  Of course, not every traveler’s budget will stretch to a stay at this chic and sleek hotel, but Silvio was more than happy to share his top nightlife tips with Nileguide.
As president of the Brazilian Concierge Association, he really knows his stuff, so read on if you want to discover where the rich and famous are advised to head to when they head to Rio.

Silvio’s top spot for guests looking for a drink locally is Horse’s Neck Bar – “It has a balcony, beautiful views over Copacabana” beach, live music at weekends, and best of all, it’s situated right here at Sofitel Rio”, he explains.
He also recommends Palpaphita Kitch, a relaxed but sophisticated bar/restaurant located by Lagoa, Rio’s beautiful city lake. “It has a nice atmosphere and stunning views”, he enthuses.
Groups of girls heading out together and guys heading out together should head to the many upscale nightclubs of Ipanema and Leblon, Silvio advises, while those looking for a little more of a local flavor should head to Lapa, in downtown Rio. Mauricio, who himself frequents many of Lapa’s lively bars, loves the neighborhood for its “exciting atmosphere, typical bars and electrifying live music”, adding that he “feels the soul of the city” in this most bohemian of districts.
For a spot of relaxation after a booze-fuelled night on the tiles in Lapa, make like Silvio and head for the quiet confines of Rio’s beautiful Botanic Gardens. While hard-working Silvio says that he is “very much in love” with his professional life, even the most diligent of concierges deserve a day off now and then.
