Five Places to Propose in Rio

Arpoador Rock is a wonderfully romantic spot

Cities simply don’t get much more spectacular than Rio de Janeiro, making it the perfect place for romantically-minded travelers to pop the question. With majestic views, miles of beaches, vibrant nightlife and some excellent (if expensive) restaurants and hotels, there is no end of opportunity for creating the ultimate romantic moment.

The mixture of sultry samba, beating sun and beautiful setting is enough to melt even the hardest of hearts – just be careful you don’t get carried away and propose to that beautiful Brazilian you met on Ipanema beach two days ago…

For those who really are sure they want to tie the knot, here’s our pick of the top spots to propose:

Arpoador Rock. After a day soaking up the sun on the sands of Ipanema or Copacabana, head to Arpoador just as the sun starts to set. This spot sits right between the two beaches, and a huge rock jutting out into the crashing waves makes for some spectacular views over the city and its beaches.

Pergula at Copacabana Palace. Even if the budget won’t stretch to a night’s stay at this most celebrated of hotels, you can enjoy a poolside drink in the fabulous surroundings of the hotel’s informal bar/restaurant (Cipriani is the more formal restaurant). Dress to impress, order a Champagne cocktail and get ready to ask the big question. If the budget can cover a night here as a special post-proposal surprise, all the better.

Parque das Ruinas. This little park in leafy Santa Teresa is home to the ruins of a Belle Epoque mansion home, now partially reformed and offering stunning views from the top floor.  The climb up the metal stairway is enough to have your head swimming and your legs trembling even before you start to ask the question, so give yourself time to catch your breath first!

Aprazivel. Santa Teresa again, and this restaurant features a wonderful tropical garden where tables and chairs are set out under fairylight-strewn trees. The views are stunning, the French-Brazilian food is delicious, and the mood could hardly be more romantic.

The foot of the Christ Statue. Okay, so you won’t be in the most intimate of settings, but if you’re looking for a blessed union, what spot could be better than at the foot of the famous Christ the Redeemer statue? The breathtaking views are the icing on the (wedding) cake.
