Summer Carnival (zomer carnaval) is one of the most exciting ways to experience the multi-cultural identity of Rotterdam. Held every year on the last Fri-Sat of July., the carnival presents a colorful and vivacious side of the city along with an opportunity to have cultural interactions between the participants and the public that makes the carnival unique.
More than one million visitors from all over Europe come over to witness this dazzling event. The carnival kick starts with the election of the Carnival Queen who then represents the festival on different occasions. The queen gets chosen based on not just beauty but her knowledge of the summer carnival, its cultural inheritance and her dance skills.
Battle of Drums is held next, at Coolsingel in Rotterdam. This battle determines the “Best Brass band of the Summer Carnival” from over a 100 percussionists and trumpeters trying to outdo each other.
Then comes the final day of the carnival with the much anticipated Street Parade. The carnival participants parade through the inner streets and lanes of Rotterdam with Latin music from the Caribbean blaring from the loud speakers. The day then ends with live music performances by artists – from home and abroad.
