Snowbird’s Annual Oktoberfest Celebration Begins August 21, 2010

Snowbird Ski Resort is gearing up for their annual Oktoberfest celebration and the Snowbird village will be transformed into a Bavarian village beginning August 21, 2010.  The beer will flow and lederhosen and dirndls will be paraded on weekends all the way through October 10.

Why an Oktoberfest party at a ski resort in the middle of summer you may be wondering?  Well… over 30 years ago two men were inspired to dress up in their lederhosen and play their accordions in the mountains around Snowbird since the towering peaks reminded them of their homeland in Germany.  Over the years many joined in the celebration and now Snowbird has the largest Oktoberfest in the state.

Adults will love the beer, bratwursts, dancing, and the crisp mountain air and kids will have plenty to enjoy with face paintings, inflatable rides, yodelers, the world famous Yo-Yo Man, clowns, music, and more.

Snowbird will feature live musical performances every day during Oktoberfest in the festival tent.  Visitors can also catch a performance of the Alp Horns (giant wooden horns that were used for communication European mountain villages) on the top of Hidden Peak.  Catch a tram ride ($12 adult; $10 children) up to the top and don’t forget to pack a sweater – temps can be up to 20 degrees cooler at Hidden Peak.

The event is FREE you just need to bring along plenty of cash for Utah microbrews and a sampling of bratwursts, sauerkraut, apple strudel, pretzels and Bavarian roasted almonds.

It’s interesting and fun to see things from the other side of the gender coin. It’s often not too terribly different. Thanks, friend.
