The Brunch Scene in Salt Lake City

Food, What's New — By Amiee Maxwell on October 14, 2010 at 7:00 am

This is a guest post written by Becky Rosenthal of the Vintage Mixer.

We sat around the table for dinner the other night with some good friends we rarely see. Chatting about some recent travels and the latest news of our lives, we shared our Portland experiences and love of that food scene. Observations and comparisons of Salt Lake’s emerging scene of taste in the vein of Portland were drawn. Though our trajectory may be Portlandward, we’ve got a ways to go.

Our friends spoke of a lacking brunch scene in Salt Lake. I disagree. There is a huge scene for weekend brunch here. Have they not heard? We’ll forgive them for not exploring the options for good brunch.  We’ll forgive them but also I wanted to enlighten them without sounding arrogant. I truly want people to explore the city more and to experience all that Salt Lake has to offer.

So, along with my friends, I hope to get you out and about this weekend and inspire you to see for yourself that Salt Lake has a wonderful brunch scene.  Here are some photos and ideas for places to hit up for a weekend brunch.  Bring on the Bloody Mary’s, Eggs Benedict, and the Mile High Biscuits!

A staple to Salt Lake, without question, you simply must go to Ruth’s Diner for breakfast on their heated patio. You will fall in love with their sinful mile high biscuits with raspberry jam.

Make a reservation at this hip downtown restaurant, Wild Grape Bistro, for weekend brunch and enjoy eggs benedict, benigets, or for a sweet treat try the french toast with berries and lemon curd. Your finest taste buds will thank you.

Bring on the spice one Saturday morning and order Huevos Rancheros with avocados and ranchero sauce at Frida Bistro. Don’t forget your morning cocktail here too; try one of their special Bloody Marys.

Award winning sourdough pancakes topped with hot apple compote or fresh berries, along with a spectacular view of the mountains, at Silver Fork Lodge up Big Cottonwood Canyon. A personal favorite where I’ve celebrated many special occasions.

Try the downtown dining scene and head to Main Street for some comfort food at The Bayleaf Cafe. This modern diner has everything you would hope for and more like shrimp and grits or chicken and waffles. Plus they are open 24 hours on the weekends.

About the Author: I enjoy all of the details of life in Salt Lake. Every time I glance up at the mountains I am thankful to live in such a beautiful place. From the spectacular fall colors and falling leaves, to the flaky sweet pastries at the bakery by my house. I write about my experiences around town: eating, hiking, and exploring the Salt Lake at The Vintage Mixer. I’m married to a local musician, Josh Rosenthal, who always keeps me on my toes and inspires me with his thoughtful song writing. On my blog, I write about the old fashioned style of enjoying food through good recipes, dining out, and dinner parties.  There’s power in developing friendships over a shared meal! While I’m not in Salt Lake, I’m traveling with my husband around the U.S. as he plays concerts and I get to explore new cities, culture, and local food. But nothing feels better than coming back home to the mountains.
