Rupertikirtag, Salzburg’s festival in honour of its patron, St Rupert, is held every September. ‘Rupert’ himself, shown here, marks the opening of the five-day event by tapping the beer barrel.

Barrels of Rupertikirtag’s signature beer, Stiegl, are brought to the festival’s opening on horse-drawn wagons, accompanied by a re-creation of the city’s 18th century guard.

Residenzplatz is filled with fun-fair rides. Young and old alike bring out their traditional wear, called tracht, especially for the occasion.
