A Traditional $5 San Diego Lunch

One might think that it is pretty easy to find an inexpensive, mouth watering Mexican meal for under $5 in San Diego. Sure, it’s easy to spot the Mexican mom and pop shops throughout the city, but it’s quite another thing to find a mouthwatering treat for under Abraham Lincoln. Rudy’s Taco Shop in Solana Beach has perfectly fused the classic San Diego Mexican cuisine with great prices.

Rudy’s offers a variety of burritos including their signature carne asada, but to truly define San Diego’s Mexican food obsession while walking away for under $5 it’s all about the California burrito. Chock full of fresh carne asada slices, crispy fresh fries and layers of guacamole and sour cream, you won’t need anything but a big glass of water and some salsa on the side to complete your meal.

It isn’t easy to find a great California burrito for under $5 here in the city. A signature dish to San Diego (even other Southern California cities are resistant to the border city’s trend), the California burrito is hefty and can be built in a variety of ways. Rudy’s version remains simple while sticking to this Mexicali tradition.

Unlike other fast food chains in the area, Rudy’s hole in the wall shop isn’t just a grill and counter. With outdoor seating, fresh meat counter and market, locals who have spotted this hidden gem purchase signature Mexican bread, meat, cheese and refreshments – all at a great price. Teenagers, businessmen, surfers and even local police fill the shop at all hours of the day, picking up burritos to go – and can easily walk about for under $5.

I LOVE California Burritos, though I have to say I do prefer it’s cousin, Carne Asada Fries. But still a California Burrito for under $5 that’s a pretty good deal. I’ll definitely have to check it out sometime.
