With Christmas behind us and the clean slate of 2011 knocking on our conscious, it’s no mystery that you’re thinking about resolutions for the new year. Admit it. But you’re in good company because we’re all thinking about ways to look better, act better, and be better. Whether you’re passing through Santa Barbara, visiting friends, or enjoying your last vacation days before heading back to work, here are some top SB offerings that promise to kick your body back into shape.
1. Boot Camp
Need a little motivation to get moving? The trainers at Innate Body Boot Camp will do the trick with their inviting and effective fitness programs—think boot camps held on the beach and tweaks to your lifestyle that will bring the results you want.
Who says working out has to be a pain? Grab your hula hoop and head to hoopdance classes on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 pm at 100 E. Carrillo Street, where hoopdance company Flame Fatale will bring out your inner child. Hooping tones your core, arms, thighs, and bum.
Take a deep breath and practice your downdog at Santa Barbara’s favorite yoga studio, Yoga Soup. Owner and instructor Eddie Ellner’s Yoga Soup class is a bit of everything (and available for a donation), while some of the town’s best teachers offer up something for yogis and yoginis of all levels.
4. The Great Outdoors
You don’t need a trainer or a room full of sweaty people to tighten and tone. Head to the Mesa’s oceanfront Shoreline Park—located on Shorline and La Marina—situated on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific. Grassy fields are prime for stretching and dropping for push-ups, and stairs and paths lead you right down to the sand for brisk walks and jogs. Even the kiddies can burn some energy on the sea-theme playground.
5. The Gym
Of course, if you prefer a good, old fashioned gym, head downtown to 24-Hour Fitness Agassi-Sport, where you can hop onto the eliptical machine, run on the treadmill, or check out the group fitness class schedule.
