An American Family, a groundbreaking, 12-part PBS documentary series set in Santa Barbara in the 1970s featured Pat and Bill Loud and their five teens. The series was the first-ever foray into the genre of reality television, and the Loud family rose to fame—revealing their personal family drama along the way and putting Santa Barbara on the map. HBO recently aired a fictionalized account of the Louds and their ’70s Santa Barbara lifestyle in Cinema Vérité, starring Diane Lane, Tim Robbins, and James Gandolfini.
