Gallup becomes a swirl of color and culture during the 90th annual Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, Aug. 10-14. Dancers, artisans, musicians, vendors and families from tribes across North America and Mexico gather in Gallup for a week of celebration and communion. Begun in 1922 by the Gallup Kiwanis Club as a way to honor the area’s Native Americans, the event has become one of the world’s largest annual powwows. The event begins on Wednesday with Indian art previews and the beginning of the 2011 Inter-Tribal Ceremonial Queen contest. Thursday, the all-Indian rodeo begins at 1:30 p.m. daily through Sunday. Don’t miss the parades through downtown Gallup along Historic Route 66 Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m. The Indian Ceremonial dances at Red Rocks begin at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, where the bonfire-lit arena is a kaleidoscope of hundreds of dancers. Throughout the weekend at Red Rock Park there’ll be craft demonstrations, the Indian Art Market, dances and Native food booths. The Queen is crowned at 8 p.m. Saturday. For more information and to confirm the schedule of events, visit www.theceremonial.com. Parking is $5 per vehicle.
