Ano Novo at O Galeao in Camburi

Camburi and neighboring Camburizinho rang in the New Year with pyrotechnic displays over the praia (beach).  Spectators counted down the final seconds of 2010, before spraying champagne, setting off bottle rockets and shouting celebratory declarations into the night.

The scene took on the appearance of a giant white party, with almost everyone dressed in pristine pale t-shirts, shorts or skirts.  Some revelers gave further into superstition by submerging themselves in the ocean and jumping over seven waves for good luck.

Following the fireworks, many in the crowd filed off to their respective festivities… or just hung out in the street consuming drinks–capetas, caipirinhas and cervejas–and hot dogs from a line of food carts.

The town’s nightclub, O Galeao, opened its doors to the merrymakers and NileGuide Sao Paulo. The pirate ship-themed disco mounted DJ booths in two distinct atmospheres, one outside under the stars and the other in a galley-looking lounge (with a dancing pole). The musical styles ranged from top-40 hip-hop to Brazilian beach tunes, as a full house boogied away until the first sun of 2011 appeared.

Here are some photos from O Galeao. See you back there soon!
