Entertaining the Kids in Singapore

Things to Do, Travel Tips — By mariannerogerson on July 14, 2010 at 7:23 am

Singapore is something of a giant playground for kids, with world-class visitor attractions perfect for a family day of fun. The city’s lack of chaos compared to many Asian cities may have earned it an unfair reputation for being ‘sterile’ and ‘boring’, but on the flipside, it makes it a fun and easy city to explore with kids. The public transport system is efficient, clean and safe and strict standards of hygiene mean you can happily explore the local culinary scene.

One of the first stops for many families is the Singapore Zoo, regarded as one of the best zoos in the world. The ‘open zoo’ concept makes for a thrilling visit, as the animals are free to roam in spacious landscaped enclosures, mostly separated from visitors by concealed moats. Feeding times and a range of shows are great for interactive fun. For the best start to the day, head up to the zoo early for the Jungle Breakfast with Wildlife – the only place in the world where you can breakfast with an orang utan!

The next door Night Safari, the world’s first night-time wildlife park, is equally – if not more – impressive, providing guests with the unique experience of viewing nocturnal creatures in a tropical jungle at night. A 45-minute tram ride and various walking trails allow you to take in the jungle sounds and spot the animals.

Then there is the beautifully landscaped Jurong Bird Park with over 8,000 birds. It boasts the world’s largest walk-in aviary, the African-themed Waterfall Aviary, and The Lory Loft – the worlds’ largest Lory Flight Aviary with nearly 1,000 lories and lorikeets – with suspension bridges and walkways to explore and the opportunity to feed the brightly coloured parrots with a special nectar mixture.

Sentosa, dubbed ‘Singapore’s Playground’ provides the most concentrated assortment of family-friendly attractions. The jewel in the crown is undoubtedly the newly opened Universal Studios, with its movie-themed rides and the opportunity to meet Shrek. Then there is Underwater World – home to more than 2,500 fish and sea creatures from over 250 species, Dolphin Lagoon, where several ‘Meet the Dolphins’ shows take place daily, the MegaZip Adventure Park, the Luge and Songs of the Sea.

No need to hear those dreaded words “I’m Bored!” from the kids when in Singapore!
