Try it Today – Chilli Crab
Food — By mariannerogerson on August 11, 2010 at 4:31 amChilli Crab is one of the most famous dishes in Singapore, considered by many to be the National Dish. Fresh Sri Lankan crabs are dished up in a tangy, spicy chilli sauce made from a blend of crab meat, chilli, ginger, fresh lemon juice, sambal, western-style ketchup, and finished with egg white.
At most restaurants you can choose your own live crab from a tank (if you’re not too squeamish about the idea), then it will be taken away, cooked and served to your table. It’s messy business eating crab, and some restaurants will even give you a bib to help save your clothes. There is only one way to eat it though – get stuck in with your fingers, crack open the shells and suck out the flesh. Don’t forget to order Mantou, or fried Chinese buns to go with it, which are perfect for scooping up the delicious sauce with.
One of the most pleasant places to enjoy these juicy, spicy crustaceans is the East Coast Seafood Centre. Here you’ll find a cluster of open-air seafood restaurants facing out to sea, so take a wander and take your pick. If you don’t fancy the twenty minute cab drive to get to the East Coast Seafood Centre, city centre favourites include Jumbo Seafood at Clarke Quay, and Red House Seafood at Robertson Quay.
