Sunshine, blue skies and in the Australian tradition, a schooner of amber nectar. Here’s where to find the best beer gardens in Sydney.
1. Newport Arms Hotel
Watch yachties sail by on Pittwater below. Serving up the good stuff since 1880, the waterfront pub icon is celebrating its 130th birthday and being Australia’s largest waterfront beergarden. Ice cold beer goes down well with crispy golden crumbed prawns.
Cnr Beaconsfield & Kalinya St, Newport
(02) 9997 4900
2. The Golden Sheaf
The Eastern Suburbs set hangs out here late on a Sunday. Park on a bench in the garden, play pool, enjoy lots of live music and wander up to the leafy deck to drink a little nearer to the stars. Who cares if it’s a school night?
429 New South Head Rd, Double Bay
(02) 9327 5877
Designer beers in Darlo. There are over 50 wines by the glass to choose from as well as seriously good cheese plates and kooky cocktails, all downed in the Alice in Wonderland style garden with fake flower decorated terraces of the Rose Garden.
2 Elizabeth Bay Rd, Elizabeth Bay
(02) 9357 5333
4. Coogee Bay Hotel
Sunday is the day for it and the Coogee Bay Hotel crams in a fun, beachy crowd. Thongs are cool but budgie smugglers are for swimming only. Schooners of ‘New’ all round. Join the noisy mix of tourists, families and locals.
253 Coogee Bay Road Coogee,
(02) 9665 0000
5. The Tilbury
Pulling a mean schooner and therefore the crowds to its big deck to sup some designer on tap beers under the olive trees. Groups are welcome for good fun afternoon Sunday gatherings.
12-18 Nicholson St, Woolloomooloo
(02) 9368 1955
6. Watson’s Bay Hotel
Ferry is the way forward: you’ll be at the bar far faster as parking is a pain here. Sink a couple with friends, fish and chips and sea food platters. Hang until sunset.
11 Marine Parade, Watsons Bay
(02) 9337 2007
7. The Commodore Hotel
Beer on tap in a locally loved outside terrace beer garden. The bistro does quality burgers and plates of mountainous nachos for those wanting more of a nibble.
206 Blues Point Road, McMahons Point,
(02) 9922 5098
8. The Oaks
Grab your choice of brew and throw a rib eye beef steak on the barbie for some cook-it-yourself action. Sit under the old oak tree lit up with fairy lights. Cheers!
118 Military Rd, Neutral Bay
(02) 9953 5515
9. Opera Bar
Ferries come and go but the cool crowd stays late. Designer beers go with designer outfits. Swing out to a little jazz.
Lower Concourse Level, Sydney Opera House
(02) 9247 1666
10. Manly Wine
Gnomes and green foliage bring the garden indoors. The Giggly Rose is a floral cocktail fave. Boutique beers are the go. Cherubs and peacocks add to the eclectic décor. Settle into kooky cushioned benches on a rainy Sunday arvo.
8–13 South Steyne, Manly
