These hot and humid summer months are perfect for a weekend getaway with that special person in your life. As luxury travel finds a firm footing in Taiwan, there are plenty of opportunities for an extravagant escape. But, if you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city but don’t want to empty your wallet, you can still plan your intimate weekend on a budget.

Save: Jiufen Weekend

In Jiufen, a former gold mining town north of Taipei, walk hand in hand down the quaint allies of the commercial district running along the coastal hills. Stop in to one of the many tea houses before enjoying a dinner of fish-ball soup and taro dumplings while taking in the view of the Pacific ocean. Even though you’re only an hour from Taipei, you’ll feel a world away.

Splurge: Wulai Hot Springs

The aboriginal village of Wulai just 30 minutes outside of Taipei is famous for its hot springs and local culture. Upon arrival, take a leisurely stroll through the open-air market before heading out on a romantic hike down “Lover’s Path” to the Wulai Waterfalls. Take the gondola to the top of a nearby mountain for spectacular views, lunch, and an afternoon hiking the nature trails or paddle boating on the lake. Head back to your luxurious penthouse suite for an intimate soak in your own open-air hot spring bath.
