While there’s plenty of action within Taipei city limits, some of the best travel opportunities in the country exist in the surrounding countryside. Travelers with an extra day to kill in Taipei can check out one of the following day trips within a few hours drive of Taipei.

Jiufen- A former gold-mining town, Jiufen perches on the cliffs overlooking the Keelung sea. Today, the quaint little village offers visitors great shopping, seafood, and scenic views.

Wulai- The small town of Wulai, located just south of Taipei, is best known for its hot springs and waterfall. Hike to the waterfall, ride the scenic gondola, or sip on tea next to the river.

Sanxia- Culture and history buffs will appreciate the beautiful architecture and sculpture of the Zushi temple in Sanxia. The city’s Hakka Museum chronicles the history of the Hakka minority group from Taiwan and southern China.

Caoling Old Trail- The Caoling Historic Trail extends ten kilometers from Fulung to Dali. The two to three hour easy hike is perfect for nature lovers looking to escape the city for a day.

Pinglin- The cool mountain climate of Pinglin is perfect for growing tea, and a trip to Pinglin gives travelers the opportunity to taste tea, visit the tea museum, and bike the nature trails along the stream.
