As much as Israelis love soccer, they haven’t quite mastered the fine art of making it into the World Cup this year. And so, although Israelis won’t be cheering their countrymen on to a victory, that doesn’t mean that those of us who are from more successful soccer countries don’t have the opportunity. There are many English-speaking bars that are showing World Cup games, but three in particular stand out as bars you should head to if you’re in Tel Aviv at World Cup time.
The first is Mike’s Place on the Tayelet(Herbert Samuel 28), which has English-speaking waitresses and bartenders, several television screens and boasts a wide variety of American food. The appetizer quesadillas are perfect for a tide-you-over snack without the guilt of a lot of fat that usually comes with appetizers.
The second bar is The English Pub(16 Allenby) with two levels of beer drinking fun. Scott, the owner, told me they are broadcasting every game and since South Africa and Israel are in nearby time zones, those of us in Israel can watch the games at normal times, and live. It will certainly be a lively place to watch the first USA match-up vs. England, June 18th, 4 p.m.
The third is a bar called MASH, which stands for More Alcohol Served Here, and it is where I will be watching the first USA game against England. MASH is at the north end of Dizengoff near to the port which boasts that it is the best pub in Israel. If you happen to be there on a Monday night, join in the no-money poker tournament which begins at 9:30. MASH has an all English-speaking staff with a variety of International food choices.

So put your war paint on, wear your country’s flag on your back and start to get your hooligan on….it’s World Cup time.
